Avalon Bay 11 x 14 original oil What is it that draws me to the magical village of Avalon? The gently rocking sailboats in the turquoise harbor, the slow pace of the traffic and shoppers, or the dream of dancing at the Casino Ballroom? Perhaps it is simply to relax and be renewed by it's bountiful beauty.
One lazy Sunday afternoon, I found myself at the beach painting this lovely little seaside village of Avila Beach. The afternoon sun cast a warm glow on the buildings which made them look like rainbow sherbet. What a wonderful place to be refreshed!
Ceruleum Wave 20 x 30 original oil One might think it was not worth it, to paint a single wave. As I sat by the beach, watching each wave press forward, I was amazed at the complexity of movement, variety of color and dancing light. Then this wave came in, and was captured by my camera. It seemed to travel perpendicularly over the one before. It negated all the artistic rules I had taught in years of art classes. God’s creation has so many surprises!
Coming Back to Avila 16 x 20 original oil I painted a similar scene of Avila several years ago. It was light and fun. Living near this lovely beachfront village, I am able to visit often. As my love for this place has grown, I felt a need for more intense color and passion. Sometimes as love grows, we have to change the depth of our colors. Don't you think so?
“Hearst Castle (R)” Original Oil Painting 39 x 60 (original available) Hearst Castle (R) sits high upon a hill overlooking the spectacular vistas of California’s Central Coast. The historical monument has a priceless art collection, pools to dream of, and gardens to get lost in. It is truly a magnificent accomplishment! As I painted and studied this area, literally for several years, my thoughts moved to the eternal, and I was reminded that Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you”.This Castle, as beautiful as it is, is a mere shadow of what we can expect in heaven. Original Oil Painting 18 x 24 (sold) Father Junipero Serra was on an expedition heading north through California when he came upon the Valley of the Bears. It was there on September 2, 1772 that the fifth mission of the chain of Franciscan stations was established. My desire was to paint the Mission as it looks today, with the welcoming glow of an afternoon sun. In the foreground you’ll see the beautiful statues of a child and a bear gazing at their reflections in the water.
